The neighborhood in one sentence:

A mix of historic brick bungalows and multimillion dollar contemporary mansions built on scrape-offs along tree-lined streets surrounds one of the best amenities urban Denver has to offer: Washington Park itself.

Favorite places and best-kept secrets:

The small shops and restaurants along Old South Gaylord make a perfect getaway, within walking distance from Wash Park and its two lakes, rec center, boat house, 2.4-mile loop, flower gardens, tennis/basketball courts and vibrant landscaping. South Pearl Street in West Wash Park was once the site of the city’s first trolley car route, and is now home to small shops, galleries, restaurants, farmers markets and summer festivals. Away from the hustle and bustle in the southeast corner of the ‘hood sits Veterans Park, where local team sports – baseball, soccer, kickball – are all the rage. And let’s not forget Bonnie Brae Ice Cream shop, a neighborhood icon, anytime of the year.

What are transportation and parking like?

Close enough to bike to work downtown, with a lot of bus routes. A light-rail station connects to the city. Street parking is plentiful, but it can get pretty crowded in the summer months when everyone wants to be in the park.//what with all the music and arts festivals, fundraising runs, volley ball tournaments and other activities.

Better for buyers or renters? Why?

Buyers – if you can afford it. The old real estate adage about location applies here. Wash Park will never run out of people who want to live there.

Other things to know about your neighborhood?

Wash Park has been compared to a mini Central Park. One of its gardens is a replica of George and Martha Washington’s gardens at Mount Vernon. Nearby is an elm tree grafted from the old Washington Elm in Massachusetts, the spot where then-General Washington assumed command of the Continental Army in 1775. The park was designated as one of the “Great Public Spaces in America” by the American Planning Association in 2012.
